چکیده

There has recently been interest in the role of inverse bremsstrahlung, the emission of photons by fast suprathermal ions in collisions with ambient electrons possessing relatively low velocities, in tenuous plasmas in various astrophysical contexts. This follows a long hiatus in the application of suprathermal ion bremsstrahlung to astrophysical models since the early 1970s. The potential importance of inverse bremsstrahlung relative to normal bremsstrahlung, i.e. where ions are at rest, hinges upon the underlying velocity distributions of the interacting species. In this paper, we identify the conditions under which the inverse bremsstrahlung emissivity is significant relative to that for normal bremsstrahlung in shocked astrophysical plasmas. We determine that, since both observational and theoretical evidence favors electron temperatures almost comparable to, and certainly not very deficient relative to proton temperatures in shocked plasmas, these environments generally render inverse bremsstrahlung at best a minor contributor to the overall emission. Hence inverse bremsstrahlung can be safely neglected in most models invoking shock acceleration in discrete sources such as supernova remnants. However, on scales >∼ 100 pc distant from these sources, Coulomb collisional losses can deplete the cosmic ray electrons, rendering inverse bremsstrahlung, and perhaps bremsstrahlung from knock-on electrons, possibly detectable. Subject headings: acceleration of particles — cosmic rays — supernova remnants — radiation mechanisms: non-thermal — gamma-rays: theory

Inverse Braking Radiation and Resonance Absorption in Corona Plasmas of Inertial Confinement Fusion

Abstract: In this paper, combining the Maxwell equations with the electron balanceequation, we obtain the inverse braking radiation absorption coefficient in a laser fusioncorona plasma. For a fixed plasma temperature, variations of the absorption coefficientversus the penetration depth into the plasma are illustrated numerically for differentvalues of laser wavelength. ...

Modulational instability of dust ion acoustic waves in astrophysical dusty plasmas with non thermal electrons

Propagation of dust ion acoustic waves in plasmas composed of nonthermal distributed electrons and stationary dust particles is investigated. Nonlinear Schrdinger equation is derived to describe small amplitude waves, using the reduction perturbation technique. Modulation instability of dust ion acoustic waves is analysed for this system. Parametric investigation indicates that growth rate of...

Inverse bremsstrahlung cross section estimated within evolving plasmas using effective ion potentials

We estimate the total cross sections for field stimulated photoemissions and photoabsorptions by quasi-free electrons within a non-equilibrium plasma evolving from the strong coupling to the weak coupling regime. Such transition may occur within laser-created plasmas, when the initially created plasma is cold but the heating of the plasma by the laser field is efficient. In particular, such a t...

Evidence for Shock Acceleration in the Binary Pulsar System Psr B1259-63

The PSR B1259-63 system (Johnston et al. 1992, 1994) was observed near periastron by the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory in January 1994. This system contains a rapidly rotating pulsar and a Be star in a highly eccentric binary orbit. We report the discovery by the OSSE instrument of unpulsed emission with a hard power-law spectrum between 50 and 200 keV from the direction of this system. Neither...

Inverse bremsstrahlung in relativistic quantum plasmas.

We study the absorption of an intense electromagnetic wave in a plasma by inverse bremsstrahlung, in the relativistic quantum regime, by using the Klein-Gordon (KG) equation. We examine the following points: (1) the solutions of the KG equation in the absence of collisions; (2) the transition probabilities between electron momentum states, and (3) the effective collision frequency in the weak a...
